Block Parties / NYT

Last year summer I teamed up with 19 other photographers to tell stories about block parties around NYC for @nytimes . I was assigned to a neighborhood in Queens organized by incredible coordinator Sudan Deane. Deane started the block party in 2014 with the goal of getting her neighbors to get to know each other, show up for each other, have fun, show love, and have unity in the community. Deane mentions that “home is where the community is.” I personally think block parties make NYC so special. I hope this culture here in this city gets protected by all means, for it to continue to thrive given that gentrification (landlord crisis, rent crisis, private property crisis, etc) is not being regulated enough. These block parties echo so much joy and strength in this city.
